Visit to Porto Velho
1 February 2013
In Cape Verde the north east trade wind is a constant factor. The wind direction is not always exact from the northeast, but it can be anything between north and east and varying between 4-7 Bft. Always, except today.
After we picked up the guest who got stranded at Sal, we set sail and coursed to São Nicolau. The wind was weak and disappeared completely after a few hours. With help from the engine we arrived this morning. Not in Tarrafal, but in Porto Velho, on the east side; a new destination for us. The coastline is very steep. A mile from the shore it was still more than 1000 metres deep. We have to get very close to the shore to drop the anchor at 30 metres. Our guests have been picked up to make a tour around the island. We are sailing the ship to Tarrafal and preparing for a birthday barbecue on deck this evening.
