06 Feb Sand and dust
Sand and dust
6 February 2013
We are one hour on the way but we cannot see Sal anymore. The visibility is very poor as often in Cape Verde. Dust and sand is blown by the wind from the Sahara over sea towards the islands, and it is everywhere. On deck, in the masts between the blocks. Where we can’t clean there are already thick layers. Everyone who climbs up the rigging returns brown/yellowish. The sporadic rains create small mud streams down.
The dust is also indoors, we clean as much as we can but if you for instance change a battery of a clock you will find dust there too.
But it is a beautiful day and the sea is calm. While everyone is taking turns at the wheel, we sail towards Santiago.
