Sailing further along the coast
16 March 2013
After we left Salvador the wind decreased and turned to the southeast 1-2 Bft. This meant that we couldn’t reach the island of Tinharé at once so we had to tack. In the afternoon the wind turned to the east-southeast 3 Bft and now we could sail directly to the island. Just before dark we arrived in the bay on the north side of Ilha de Tinharé, at Morro de São Paulo. A beautiful island with a fortress on the north side and the whole island is covered with lush green vegetation.
That evening we celebrated a birthday of one of our guest crewmembers. It was a great evening with storytelling, Brazilian samba music on the background and even the ships bongo got played on. During the night we had a few heavy showers with a lot of wind, but this was actually quite nice. The ship cooled down and everyone slept like a log.
After breakfast the guests went to visit the island for some sightseeing, snorkelling and souvenir shopping. Just in time for lunch they were back on board. After lunch we continued our journey, we’ll sail around the island and then we will set sail for Rio de Janeiro. This is about 700 miles to the south, so we will be on open sea for about 5 days sailing along the coast.
