“What a magnificent world, sailing on the ocean with no land in sight. We have passed Cape Leewin about 8 days ago and are now on a direct course to Adelaide. About 230 miles to go of the 1300 miles in total from Fremantle. For me it is the first time that I am travelling a long way seemingly with not much variation in the sailing plan. But this couldn’t be less true. For the more experienced sailors it is a quiet voyage so far, but I am experiencing it as a very active well-oiled business. Besides sailing, there is constant maintenance. Sanding, painting, acrobatic climbing of the sailors in the rigging to reach the blocks and to change the ropes. Below deck there is also work in the engine room. And of course there is work going on in the galley. Wouter is working here with limited space and constant movement of the ship and he manages to deliver three delicious course meals. Also breakfast and lunch are very tasteful and extensive. And I expect a surprise this evening because today we caught a tuna! What a spectacle, such a big fish of 6kg. Today one of the guests, Steven, surprised everyone by baking an apple pie for everyone.
We have been sailing since midnight and we are making progress doing about 6 knots. We have been catching up with the bark ‘Europa’. On Saturday morning they were about 12 miles ahead of us and we got a bit competitive and we managed to overtake them. After one month on board this sailing ship, it is all still one big spectacular adventure for me.”
