Sea life
30 September 2013
After our departure from Wineglass Bay, the wind slowly increased. After passing Flinders Island the wind veered; late on the next day we hardly could sail a course of 50 degrees. Then the wind decreased and we started the engine, hoping to leave Bass Strait behind us before the next front would hit.
This morning the wind was completely gone. But, this made it an ideal situation to spot whales. There are many of them here, on a migration course from the tropical waters to the Antarctic. In the end it was like a zoo: a pod of 6 Humpback whales swam around the ship, flapping tails and fins on the water in a playful way. Around them many seabirds: booby’s, albatross-like birds, many small storm petrels, shags etc.
We just dropped anchor at Mallacoota, in southeastern Australia. We’ll wait here a bit, till the strong northerly will back. We expect this to happen tomorrow morning, so we hope to be able to sail the last 230 NM to Sydney.
