Dragging Anchors
12 January 2014
In Port Lockroy a big part of the bay was still covered with sea ice from last winter. During the morning a lot of ice drifted into the bay. Together with big glacier ice and sea ice it was a challenge manoeuvring the dinghy to shore. But everyone was able to post their postcards in the most southern post office of the world. Slowly the ‘Oosterschelde’ departed and we went to Jougla Point. The whale skeleton, which is the big attraction, was covered in snow and not visible. That night there was a strong wind and again the anchor started to drag. Even when we dropped two anchors we did not keep the ‘Oosterschelde’ in place. The ship moved during the night to the back. This morning the wind was decreased to 4Bft. Around 08:30AM we lifted the anchors and continued our voyage of discovery. Via Neumayer channel, between Anvers Island and Wiencke Island we hope to reach Melchior Islands.
