The bunks
12 April 2014
Update by Maarten:
“This morning the easterly wind arrived as promised en we ar now sailing north towards the Azores. The count down towards our arrival has begun. We are therefor sailing over the port side, as we have been for most of this trip. This means that those of us with a bunk on the port side can once again safely nestle themselves against the wall and those with a bunk on the starboard side have to fear falling out, the latter not conducive to a good night’s rest. Many compensate this fear of flying with a life vest half tucked in below the mattress but caution is needed in any case. Alternatively you can use a triangular piece of sailcloth that is nailed to the side of your bunk and attach the point to a hook above. Use of this construction expresses great confidence in its sturdiness when you roll against it in your sleep.
Another category of us have a bunk perpendicular to the length of the ship. In these you can enjoy standing up in your bunk as the ship heels overor waking up with a red head because all your blood has gone there. A matter of chosing carefully how you put yourself down. Sadly there is only one headlight on one end of the bunk. Half the time therefor is good for feet inspection.
Thankfully after only a couple of hours it is time once again for your watch.”
