Another beautiful day

Update by Coby:
“Another beautiful day on board of the sailing vessel ‘Oosterschelde’. The sun is shining; a strong breeze is blowing and giving a spectacular cloud show while speeding us on our way to Rotterdam.
As a very inexperienced sailor (read ignorant) I have a lot to learn. It would help if all the expert guests on board would agree on the basics. I was told not to call the ‘Oosterschelde’ a ‘boat’. This apparently was degrading, but shortly after I heard the crew, who obviously love this vessel, referring to her as a boat. After being on board for an entire week and participating as a member of the ‘white’ watch, you might think that by now I know the system. Unfortunately, I have to confess that I still have to figure out all the time when I have to show up for duty again. I blame it on all the fresh air, which keeps me very sleepy. Another odd thing to learn is that on your day off, you work 2 shifts! Go figure! If this sounds like I am not enjoying this adventure, I’m sorry to give that impression. It is wonderful to be on this majestic ship, the crew is very patient and knowledgeable and always willing to explain. I stand in awe of their skills, strength and cheerfulness. The meals are varied, healthy and plentiful. Snacks and coffee/tea are always available. Easter day there were over 150 chocolate eggs hidden all over. It was fun to see people searching for them, while pretending not to. Yesterday, Mike gave a talk about carbon fibers. I thought it would be way over my head but instead found it very interesting and informative. Mike had a very clear way of relating his topic to us. He obviously loves his work. I try to imagine what life on the ocean would have been like 100 years ago. Surely we have more comforts than they did and certainly the communication systems are much improved.
I am very thankful that I have been able to have this experience and I wish the ‘Oosterschelde’ many more good sailing trips. God Bless!”
