Early watch
8 July 2014
Update by Foke:
“The first watch began at 4 AM today, nice and early. The wind is still calm during this watch and we have to trim the sailes a bit. We did not expect to row any time soon on board, but while sitting on deck, we tighten the outer jibb as if we are rowing. Sailing is fun! We feel the wind increase and wait for the ship to go faster. The crew explains some of the precautions they take before a storm comes up, like making a reef. Luckily we don’t have to do these things yet.
During the day, after a nap, we helped the other watch to trim the sailes while the wind was still increasing. After the delicious dinner we had under an angle of 20 degrees, we took over from the white watch. It was raining and there was a 20 knot wind blowing, so we had a lot of sailes that needed to be trimmed! After the trimming it mostly was keeping course. I was standing at the rudder most of the time, which was a challange, but very cool to do. The next watch wasn’t very happy about the weather and came on deck with a lot of struggle. After a long night watch, with our life jackets tucked under our matras to keep us from falling out, the ship rocked us to sleep.”
