06 Feb Last Island
Last Island
6 February 2015
We have arrived at the sixth and last island that we will visit on this trip: Boa Vista. The journey from São Nicolau to Boa Vista was very speedy. We left at night, with little sail and help from the engine. For most people it was the chance to make a long night. After breakfast, we do a morning exercise by setting the rest of the sails. Around 20:00 we dropped anchor at Sal Rei.
Boa Vista is a completely different island than the others. The fine, white sand that has blown over from the Sahara has formed beautiful dunes here and the beaches are beautiful. Ukie, our Cape Verdean guide, shows everyone the most beautiful places and talks about his new job: protecting sea turtles. On Boa Vista you will find the second largest ‘colony’ loggerhead turtles in the world and because tourists and inhabitants increasingly populate the beaches, protection is needed.
aIt not quite the last island we visit. We are anchored behind a small island (Ilha de Sal Rei) where we’re going for a walk this afternoon.
