Closer and far away
11 March 2015
Update of March 11, by Jan:
“It’s been written before, but life aboard the ‘Oosterschelde’ has its own rhythm. After the stop at the Azores we all picked it up like we know no different way to live. The watches for the trainees are not tiring: four hours watch, eight hours to yourselves. Every three the hours of you’re the times of your watches change, so you eventually do your watches every time of the day. Quite a different routine we are used to in normal life a shore.
Although we are getting closer to home, the daily life we are used too seems further away every day. Things normally keeping you busy or worry you, seems less important now. Sailing the ‘Oosterschelde’ is what important now. But, just like after a vacation a shore, once at home it will feel fine. Good memories will remain.
Meanwhile we are sailing with a speed about eight knots to the northeast. The wind, force 4-5 Bft, and a calm see make sailing very fine. The temperature dropped till 15 degrees, but that’s no problem. The only thing missing is the sun shining. It’s been cloudy for several days now. Woody told us about celestial navigation, but when there is no sun we cannot practice. Hopefully we get the chance to do so during this trip. We’ll keep you posted and let you know where we think we are.”
