Isle of Lewis

Isle of Lewis

4 June 2015

The next day we all went to the standing stones on the Isle of Lewis. These are larger and older than Stonehenge, so very impressive.
When the wind died down we left for Dunvegan. We arrived in the morning and we took our time for a nice walk and to visit the seal colony that lives there. After lunch we went back and we set sail for a stretch of 80 nM sailing towards Staffa.
Exactly as planned we arrived there in the early morning and we all went ashore to see Fingal’s Cave. Since Felix Mendelssohn has written his Overture Hebrides with this cave as inspiration we thought it would be nice to listen to this piece in the cave. That was not really a success, because the noise of the cave itself was a lot louder than our speakers. But even without classic piece remains a very impressive sight. The basalt stone formations of 20 meters high, formed entirely by nature, in a cave of 75 meters long.
When everyone was back on board we departed for Tobermory. We dropped our anchor in the bay and enjoyed a wonderful evening.
Later the final stretch awaits, the Sound of Mull to Oban.
