Jumping salmons
9 July 2015
After a quiet night in the bay of Bøvågen we left after breakfast and started on our first bridge. After we passed Haugesund, we get to an open area of sea. The easterly wind has calmed the sea down last night, but the small amount of wind doesn’t quite outweigh the calm swell, so we get the flapping mainsail down again. Around noon we sail into the Førdespollen, where we spot the first porpoise. In the back of the Førdepollen is the village Førde, where we moor for the night. We take our time for a nice stroll through the woods with wood sculptures, made by a local artist and his chainsaw. Here it is where the first mackerels are hoisted on board.
Early in the morning we sail further north, unfortunately with wind from that direction and a lot of rain. But the area on the north-east side of the island Huglo is so beautiful, the wind and rain are forgotten and everyone is out on deck with their cameras in their hands enjoying the view. While we sail up the Langenuen, the weather gets better and at the end even the sun peeks through. Once we are on the Bjørnafjorden we change our plans to seek fold a place near Bergen and sail to the east. Exactly the wrong way, but a lovely sail!
After tacking a few times we put the sails down and moor at Osøyro. In the harbor we see salmons jumping out of the water, but we cannot catch them because they’re on their way up the river for breeding. Of course we respect the breeding and put away the fishing rods for tonight.
