We arrived in Ålesund!
14 July 2015
Unesco was right! It really is very beautiful in the Geirangerfjord! On both sides the cliffs raise hundreds of meters straight up and every flat area is filled with trees. Through those, many waterfalls come crushing down and cause a haze of water across the rocks. Once we arrived in Geiranger, we dropped anchor at the end of the fjord and spent the morning walking through the valley, looking at the massive waterfall in the village. The only disadvantage of something that beautiful is that there are a lot of people looking at it. A 289 meters long cruise ship same sailing in, which blocked most of the view. After that the fog came up and sight was limited to about 100 meters. Of course that happened when we were going to leave! But on our radar, with someone at the look-out on the front of the ship and very slow sailing we managed to get around the first corner without any problems and after that the fog disappeared. Back to enjoying the view on the many waterfalls. Around midnight we dropped anchor in a small bay about 25 miles of Ålesund and today we crossed the last miles. At first there was no wind, so we started the engine, but then a little bit of wind came and we hoisted the sails. We enjoyed the serene tranquility in the fjords for the last few hours before the wind went down and we and we had to start the engine again for the last couple of miles. We are now moored in Ålesund, where we hear the revelry, the ships honking, people shouting and music that tries her best to drown it all out. We will light the barbecue later today and have a great evening!
