Lost gannet?
8 February 2016
After all the excitement of the last few days everything is ‘back to normal’, or even better! Because we have a birthday on board: Jan has turned 32 years old!
He is pampered with a mocha cake, that he ordered last year already, but it was impossible then to bake it due to weather circumstances. But now it was here and of course many other gifts, a bottle of mosquito repellent, his left shoe, a colouring book and many other practical and nice stuff. And last but not least we made a beautiful drawing that he can hang above his bed.
This morning we finally caught a Dolphin fish! But that is not what I wanted to tell you about, also not about the red-billed tropicbirds that we see daily. They are no longer ‘special’. “Hey look, a bird! Yeah yeah, just another red-billed tropicbird…” Funny how fast you get used to things.
But we also saw another bird that seems to have gone astray. It looks a lot like a gannet (Sula Bassana), but they shouldn’t be so far south. The only other option we can find is the Masked booby (Sula dactylatra), but we are not sure because he had a bit of yellow on his head/neck. For us it is a lost gannet, but maybe the bird watchers think differently?
Note: it is a Redfooted booby.
