São Jorge (Neptune’s revenge)
1 June 2016
Update by Frits:
“An unscheduled stop at São Jorge gave us the opportunity to explore the island. I suggested to go for a brisk walk, however Maarten, Gerrit and Jan opted for an easier option: rent a car. Like the other islands São Jorge offered stunning views, beautiful flowers/vegetation, rolling hills and above all, excellent food!
Driving was quite a challenge, 4 grownups in a Toyota designed for a Japanese family of 4. The lack of engine power (70 pk) was compensated by a daring way of driving. This car could deliver more revs, a higher top speed and showed a remarkable ‘off the road’ handling including high speed jumps and an ability to look around ‘blind’ corners. Highlight of the day was a visit to Fajã do Ouvidor, which is a piece of land enclosed by high cliffs and the sea, the only way to get in and out is by means of a steep road. Here a huge swell was running, flying spray with booming and banging of crushing waves. Advises we gave, a long time ago, to our children, stay clear from this kind of danger areas, were quickly forgotten. Maarten was the most daring of us all. Result? You may recall that he once wrote about Neptune: “Less lobster and more sex”. In this instance Neptune made you run for the FIRST time in many years (soon on YOUTUBE).”
