Our race from Bermuda to Boston has started!
The start was delayed with 48 hours. To make sure that the everyone could decide what race they want to sail there was a start-window of 48 hours. Meaning that you could start between June 7th, 18.00 and June 9th, 18.00. The real game is to interpret the weather forecasts and to find what is best for your ship. For us, that’s easy. We need wind. And rather 25 knots than 10. According to ‘our’ weather forecasts we decided to start as early as possible in the start-window. This is because we would have wind during the start, then there will be a small leap of little or no wind. Thereafter a wide low pressure area where we hope to profit from a solid south-south-west wind turning west. After this low pressure area there is a high pressure with little wind. We would like to avoid that one, by going North quickly.
We started, as planned, early in the start-window with a great wind. We crossed the starting line doing more than 10 knots! We have the only one other ship in our view in the AIS, the ‘Alexander von Humbold II’, but she is quite far behind and at this moment also slower. Because we don’t have internet access we cannot see whether the others ships have already started the race, and where they are. It is a bit frustrating, but also kind of fun, because now we focus more on our own race. Tomorrow afternoon we will receive the first position updates of the ships. Then we will have a better understanding of who is where and which tactics the ships use.
