Port Winston
30 August 2017
The man from Cherbourg traffic, where we have to report about our whereabouts, did not even know where it was. We explained and twenty minutes later we got permission to proceed. Port Winston, built 73 years ago in a mere 12 days. Indeed, the temporary harbour created off one of the D-Day beaches June 1944. The remains of concrete pontoons still form the silhouet of a large harbour. Most crew fell silent when we sailed in and dropped anchor.
Of course nowadays the harbour basin is a great place to fish, sail, canoe and swim. Especially on days like this, a very sunny day. Ashore the historical events are well explained in museums and memorial places.
When we sailed out all agreed: This was a very special place to visit on our last day of the voyage. Tomorrow Le Havre.
