Grogue
12 February 2018
The convenience about having one group on board, is that the people are unanimous in what they want. In this group it is clear what they want to do: walking, nature and culture. For this reason, we altered our tour on São Nicolau. First, we went to Monte Gordo, the national park. We hiked on the mountain and walked towards Ribeira Brava. A beautiful and intense walk! On the route there is a grogue factory in-between the cane fields. We enjoyed a break and found out how Grogue is made.
Firstly, the cane sugar is pressed to get the molasses out. Then they ferment the molasses and the pressed cane stalks are thrown into a heap, so they can dry. After the fermentation it is time for the distillation. Distillation requires heat, so the reed stems are used as fuel to burn and the ashes are scattered on the fields. During the distillation, the alcohol vapour is passed through a pipe that is cooled in a bowl of water. Almost everything is made with natural fabrics and resources and nothing is wasted!
Now, we are on our way to Boa Vista, and we are looking forward to a beach day!
