Settled into the rhythm

6 March 2020

A few days into our long trip, we have settled into the rhythm of sailing.

We live in two worlds, really. Below deck are the cozy living quarters and the saloon. It’s where people read, study, relax, where Richard works his magic in the galley and where the sailors almost imperceptibly make sure everything stays tidy, clean, and in perfect working condition. It has turned into our comfortable living room, even if, during dinner, the food tries to roll of your plate with the movements of the heeling ship.

Above deck, it’s all about the wind, the waves and the sails. The horizon is empty as far as the eye can see, not even airplanes fly overhead. Here, Maarten and Jan-Willem rule the sails and the wheel, answering all our sailing questions competently and patiently and sharing the fun of being out here and on our own.

And me? I’m sitting high up on a pile of sails somewhere midships, nothing between me and the far horizon, with the wind in my hair, the sun on my back and the fine spray of the breaking waves on my face. What more could you want?
