Sometimes you get lucky, and you suddenly have an eastern wind of 5-6 bft. when you have to cross Biscay to the southwest. The waves are not too high under the high shore and with a few reefs in the gaff sails and a speed between 8 and 10 knots you are already at Cape Finisterre after two days. There the wind died out and now we sail along the Portuguese coast to the south. Sometimes under sail, sometimes there is so little wind that that is not possible, and we have to switch the engine on. Maybe we’ll take shelter near Lisbon, wait for a front to pass, but maybe by then the weather forecast will have changed again. Meanwhile, when you get out of bed, there is always one less layer of clothing.
