Fernando de Noronha
We have safely arrived at Fernando de Noronha. The Darwin Leaders have come on board and are conducting research on this unique island, they are for example focussing on octopuses, exotic species, and sharks. We are anchored in the bay, and even if you stay on board, there is plenty to see. Every day, dozens or even hundreds of so-called Spinner Dolphins swim around the ship.
These dolphins are named Spinner because they jump into the air and make a spinning motion while doing so. It’s not entirely certain why they do this, but it’s believed that the males do this to lure sharks and other attackers away from the females and calves. There are also many sea turtles swimming around. When we take the rubber boat to the shore, we really need to be careful not to accidentally hit one. Super cool!
