Islanders
When the island’s longboat brought our guests back on board, everyone was delighted with this second day on Pitcairn. The steep climbs, Fletcher’s cave, the museum, the giant Galapagos tortoise once abandoned by a ship, the natural pool next to the pointy high rocks. Everyone had seen and experienced something different today. The islanders themselves are very friendly to the visit, which is nevertheless something of an invasion of the island. With our 30 people, there are almost as many of us as there are of them. Thanks to Steve, we were also able to replenish our stock of fruit and vegetables: Lettuce, cabbage, star fruit, oranges, tangerines, Papayas and whole bunches of bananas. Not everything seems to originally belong here, but it grows just fine, by the looks of it. In ten minutes, we will heave anchor. We still have about 300 miles ahead of us to Mangareva. The weather is about to change, tonight there will be little wind, but tomorrow there will be a southeast wind that could turn stormy by the weekend. For now, the wind is helping us move in the right direction and by the weekend we hope to drop anchor in the sheltered bay of Mangareva.
