Garbage

At Mangareva quay, we settle down a bit. We don’t have to run anchor watches, so everyone is busy with maintenance during the day. A few paint jobs, repairing broken hoops, a broken block or a leaking hatch; all jobs you don’t get around to at sea. Now that resident-researcher Grant has flown to Tahiti with a broken arm, things are otherwise quiet on board. Only Jud is still busy with his research. On Mangareva, we can also finally dispose of our waste. This was not possible since the Galapagos Islands, so waste separation on board has taken off. All waste is first washed off and then taken apart. Every plastic bag clipped up and every box folded open. Cans are also washed thoroughly and flattened every day.  And then everything is sorted: cardboard by cardboard, plastic by plastic, glass by glass, can by can etc. It is quite special to see how compact you make the waste that way. The photo shows the total harvest of 45 days with almost 30 people on board. Only the glass is not in the picture.
