Fiji

Our sail here was predominantly downwind, with the topsails and forecourse set. So, on the day before our first landfall in Fiji, our first major sailing maneuver was met with great excitement! We lowered the forecourse and set both the fore and aft sails. With nearly all hands on deck, the task was completed swiftly. Soon, we began to glimpse the first islands on the horizon. Savusavu was the name of the first spot we sighted in the Fiji Islands. We anchored in the picturesque bay, with the town to starboard and the tiny island of Nawi to port. The scene perfectly embodied a tropical paradise.

Savusavu, located on the island of Vanua Levu, is a small town known for its incredibly friendly locals and surrounded by lush green hills. On the opposite side, the shoreline features narrow black-sand beaches. We spent nearly two days exploring the town, the island, and the bay. The nights at anchor were calm, and more of the crew began opting to sleep on deck beneath the starry skies, a refreshing alternative to our bunks. With the first light of dawn came the sound of splashes as we enjoyed invigorating morning swims in the bay.

The final leg of our voyage toward Suva had us sailing close-hauled. With all sails set, we made the most of the light winds until nightfall, after which we engaged the engine to motor south through calm seas, aiming to maximize our last day aboard. At dawn, we were pleased to see the wind picking up, signaling it was nearly time to hoist the sails for our final day at sea. But before that, the sound of the fishing line running out caught our attention—we’d hooked a Mahi Mahi. Moments later, we spotted a second fish nearby, cast the lure once more, and within minutes, hauled in another.

After a day of close-hauled sailing and several tacks, we navigated between the reefs and into the harbor of Suva. Dolphins accompanied us as we entered port, a fitting escort for our final approach. That evening, we savored the fresh fish we had caught earlier in the day for our farewell dinner.
