Sea and science
The adventure at sea is in full swing! Despite the wind and waves, we remain alert and continue to make remarkable observations. The ocean unfolds like a living canvas, teeming with birds and marine life, offering new surprises each day.
In the sky, the albatrosses attract the most attention. We spot remarkable species such as the Northern and Southern Royal albatrosses, Buller’s albatross, and Salvin’s albatross. The Northern Giant petrel and the White-capped petrel also made an appearance. Some of these bird species were spotted in areas where they are not typically seen, which is quite special as it means we are expanding the range of these birds! Examples include the Black Storm petrel and the Soft-plumaged petrel, which have now also been observed along our route, making a valuable scientific contribution.
But the adventure goes beyond just birds. Beneath the surface, we were treated to an incredible display of marine life. A group of 20 dolphins, playfully leaping, passed by us as we sailed. On top of that, Sei whales made an appearance, their powerful dorsal fins breaking the surface and revealing their presence on the horizon.
All in all, a day full of new discoveries! We’re eager to see what other wonders the ocean has in store for us.
