Whales and Penguins
We experienced a few remarkable hours at sea as we sailed over the North Scotia Ridge, an underwater ridge where the water is relatively shallow—around 200 meters—compared to the surrounding ocean, which plunges to 3,000–4,000 meters deep. This underwater formation causes cold, nutrient-rich water to rise to the surface, creating an abundance of marine life. And where there is plenty of food, there are, of course, whales!
Before long, we were surrounded by several whale species. We recognized the long back and distinctive dorsal fin of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), the fluke of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), and likely also a few southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) and a minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata). Seeing these massive creatures up close remains an unforgettable experience. Some whales came so near that they seemed to be swimming alongside us in our wake. One even surfaced among a playful pod of hourglass dolphins (Lagenorhynchus cruciger) at the bow. The sightings continued well into the evening, and even after night had fallen, we could still hear the occasional breath of whales breaking the surface.
Yesterday morning started gray and foggy, so we didn’t expect much wildlife activity. But to our surprise, we suddenly heard high-pitched calls between the waves—penguins! We spotted several groups of king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) out hunting for food. On land, their waddling gait can make them look clumsy, but in the water, they are sleek and agile. At times, they drifted calmly on the waves, only to suddenly propel themselves forward like dolphins. As the wind picked up and our ship gained speed, we noticed splashes in the water. At first, we thought they were dolphins, but a closer look revealed seals. They moved smoothly through the waves, occasionally poking their heads above the surface to take a curious look around. After two days of incredible wildlife encounters, we are even more excited about our arrival in South Georgia. We can’t wait to see what awaits us there!
